One of the best ways to reduce eye strain is to reduce the amount of time that you spend staring into a screen. Unfortunately, for some professionals, it is impossible to not use a computer for long hours of the day. Fortunately, there are still some tricks that can be used to reduce the effects of eye strain.

Close Your Eyes or Look Away From the Screen

Depending on your work, it might be possible to close your eyes for a period of time while working. For example, if you are typing, you may be skilled enough to type without making any mistakes. Simply open your eyes periodically to make sure that you are not making too many mistakes. Another option is to glance away from the screen periodically without working.

Adjust the Lighting and Use an Anti-Reflective Screen

Make sure to always have a soft light on while you are working. When the glow of your computer or laptop screen is the only thing you can see, this is actually worse for your eyesight. Most offices have lighting that is twice as bright as it should be. Also, adjust the brightness of the monitor to match the brightness of the rest of the room. Place an anti-reflective screen on your monitor so that any lights in the room are not reflected off of the screen. These reflections are also distracting and can reduce your work productivity.

Change the Background Color

If possible, change the background to black and use white text. This is much easier on your eyes than a black text on a white background. For example, when using a word processor, you can usually change the color of the background. 

Don't Place Your Computer Too High

Do not use a straight ahead eye position. This is not natural and is rough on the eyes. Instead, you want the screen to be at least 7 inches below the horizontal line of sight. Fortunately, you might be able to adjust your chair to raise yourself so that your eyes are looking at the screen at the right angle. This will also be better ergonomically because your hands will be in the optimum position.
